What the course
is about
When I paint, I focus on light rather than the subject itself. Light and atmosphere are what give a painting its meaning.
Watercolor makes this way of working very clear — it forces you to think and plan before the brush touches the paper. Tone, contrast, mood — all of this needs to be considered in advance. Many people find watercolor difficult for this reason, but it's also what makes it such a powerful medium.
In this course, we focus on light, mood, and atmosphere rather than objects and details. You'll learn how to start paintings with clear, connected first washes, how to build depth with tone, and how to use contrast to create drama and space.
We'll also work on creating rich, clean darks in watercolor — something many artists avoid — to push the light further and strengthen the painting.
Along the way, I'll share practical techniques I use regularly, such as lifting and scraping, and show you how to use watercolor's transparency to create glow and atmosphere.
This course is about learning to see, plan, and paint with intention.
Who will find this
course useful
This course is for anyone who wants to better understand watercolor, with a strong focus on light, mood, and atmosphere. It's suitable for both beginners and more experienced artists.
If you're just starting out, it will help you build a solid foundation. If you already paint, it will help you identify recurring mistakes and gain more control over your process.
The main goal of this course is confidence — in your decisions, your brushstrokes, and your washes. Watercolor demands this, and confidence comes through understanding and consistent practice.
Course program
Lesson 3
"Terminus Station"
Duration: 1 hour 50 minutes
In a city at dusk, where heavy shadows meet the last light. We'll build the scene through contrast, using a dark foreground, a bright core, and minimal detail to capture the mood.
You will learn to:
- paint loose, expressive clouds and transition them smoothly into a sunset;
- work with a dark foreground by breaking it down into values, colors, and simple shapes;
- leave a controlled light area in the middle of the composition, and understand why this small detail brings the whole painting to life.
Lesson 4
"Train Station"
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
The figures and trains play a supporting role here, while light defines the space and depth. We'll unify the scene using contrast and values to guide the viewer's eye.
You will learn to:
- plan and apply the first washes to unify the entire scene;
- build a strong foundation before moving into the details;
- organize large dark areas without flattening the space;
- keep the focus on light rather than individual subjects.
Lesson 5
"Boat"
Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
This marine scene focuses on space, atmosphere, and rhythm. We'll shape the water, break up forms, and use subtle color shifts in the sky and reflections to create movement.
You will learn to:
- paint sailing boats without getting stuck in the details;
- suggest rigging and structure with minimal lines;
- use soft gradients to create atmospheric skies;
- paint reflections without copying the boat;
- bring life to a complex scene through restraint.
Lesson 7
"Snowy Barn"
Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes
This lesson focuses on nighttime lighting and mood in a winter scene. We'll work with a limited palette, temperature shifts, and subtle tonal changes to create a quiet, believable sense of space at night.
You will learn to:
- create mood in a cold winter environment;
- work with a limited palette to achieve a cool monochrome feel;
- focus on light rather than objects or details;
- build atmosphere through tone and temperature shifts.
Lesson 8
"Fiery Clouds"
Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
This lesson focuses on the sky: clouds, shifting light, and atmosphere. We'll build depth and contrast using dark silhouettes, keeping the sky alive without overworking it.
You will learn to:
- build clouds with depth, volume, and variation;
- control light within cloud forms;
- push contrast using dark foreground silhouettes;
- keep the sky expressive while staying clear and focused.
Lesson 10
"Gothenburg"
Duration: 2 hours
In this lesson, we work with a limited palette to build depth and mood through layers, tone, and light.
You will learn to:
- build depth and atmosphere by working layer by layer;
- create a strong mood through tonal values rather than color;
- simplify the palette and focus on light and dark using a single color;
- control contrast to enhance the emotional impact of the painting.
Lesson 11
"Biker in the Sunset"
Duration: 1 hour 10 minutes
This scene is built around light. Warm tones and long shadows create the mood, while minimal detail keeps the focus where it belongs.
You will learn to:
- paint a sunset using warm tones and transitions;
- use color temperature to suggest atmosphere;
- keep the focus on light rather than the subject;
- simplify figures without losing structure.
Lesson 12
"Cabin"
Duration: 2 hours
This scene is about balance between warmth and cool tones, light and shadow.
You will learn to:
- use contrast to create mood: warm light vs. cool shadow;
- build believable forest depth without overcomplicating the scene;
- paint water reflections in a natural, balanced way;
- lead the viewer's eye toward the focal point: the light in the cabin.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- I can't draw at all. Should I take the course?
-
Yes — the course is beginner-friendly. We start with simpler paintings and gradually move to more complex ones, so you can build skills step by step. It's also valuable for experienced artists: you'll refine your technique and improve your visual judgment.
- How is the feedback organized?
-
At the end of each lesson, you'll upload a photo of your work. The instructor will leave feedback in one or more formats: written notes, a paint-over, and/or an audio message. Each lesson also has a comments section where you can ask questions about the lesson or your progress.
- How long is the course?
-
If you choose an option without feedback, the pace is up to you — you can complete the lessons whenever it suits you. If you choose an option with feedback, we provide active feedback for two months from the date you activate the course (or resume it if you paused access). I recommend taking it at a relaxed pace — and enjoying the process.
- I'm 67 — can I learn to paint in this style in this course?
-
Absolutely. It's never too late to start. Many of our students are 50+ — they learn, improve, and enjoy the creative process.
